Unit Overview

GSG 9 (Grenzschutzgruppe 9) is the elite counter-terrorism and special operations unit of the German Federal Police (Bundespolizei). It was formed in response to the 1972 Munich massacre, where German police were ill-equipped to handle terrorist situations.

Unlike military special forces, GSG 9 operates under police authority, focusing on domestic counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, and high-risk arrests. The unit has gained international recognition as one of the world’s premier police tactical units.

CLASSIFIED: Training & Organization

GSG 9 selection lasts approximately 6 months and includes psychological testing, extreme physical fitness, marksmanship, close quarters battle, and tactical driving. All members are experienced police officers before applying, with most having served at least 2.5 years in regular police duties.

The unit is divided into 3 specialized groups: GSG 9/1 (Assault), GSG 9/2 (Maritime Operations), and GSG 9/3 (Airborne Operations). Each group contains approximately 100 operators. Unlike many special forces units, GSG 9 operators typically serve longer careers, with many remaining operational for 15-20 years.
