CLASSIFIED: Selection & Controversies
Alpha Group recruits primarily from other special forces units, requiring at least 5 years of military service. Training includes advanced close quarters battle, sniper skills, explosive breaching, and psychological operations. Operators receive extensive language training and cultural education.
The unit has faced significant controversy for its tactics during hostage crises, particularly the use of chemical agents in Moscow (2002) and the high civilian casualty rate in Beslan (2004). Despite this, Alpha remains Russia’s primary domestic counter-terrorism unit, with detachments in Moscow, Krasnodar, Yekaterinburg, and Khabarovsk.
