Unit Overview
The 1st Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment (1er Régiment de Parachutistes d’Infanterie de Marine) is the French Army’s premier special forces unit, operating under the Commandement des Opérations Spéciales (COS).
Originally formed from colonial parachute units, the 1st RPIMa has evolved into France’s equivalent of the British SAS or U.S. Delta Force, specializing in deep reconnaissance, direct action, counter-terrorism, and unconventional warfare.

Major Operations
Continuous operations in Chad against Libyan-backed rebels, including the famous “Toyota War” engagements.
French participation in the Gulf War, with 1st RPIMa conducting reconnaissance and sabotage missions behind Iraqi lines.
Counter-terrorism operations in the Sahel region of Africa against Islamist militant groups.
CLASSIFIED: Organization & Training
The 1st RPIMa selection process lasts 8 months and includes extreme physical endurance tests, survival training, and psychological evaluation. Successful candidates undergo an additional 18 months of specialized training in languages, demolitions, communications, and advanced combat skills.
The regiment is organized into 8 specialized companies: 1st Company (Command & Support), 2nd Company (Combat), 3rd Company (Combat), 4th Company (Combat), 5th Company (Combat), 6th Company (Combat), 7th Company (Training), and 8th Company (Reserve). Each combat company contains approximately 80 operators organized into 15-man teams. The unit maintains particularly close ties with the British SAS and U.S. Special Forces.
