Unit Overview

RAID (Recherche, Assistance, Intervention, Dissuasion) is the elite tactical unit of the French National Police, created as a counterpart to the Gendarmerie’s GIGN. The unit operates under the direction of the French Ministry of the Interior.

Specializing in counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, and high-risk arrests in urban environments, RAID is particularly focused on operations within France’s major cities. The unit is known for its distinctive blue uniforms and rapid response capability.

CLASSIFIED: Structure & Training

RAID selection includes 6 months of intensive training focusing on urban warfare, close quarters battle, sniper skills, and negotiation. Candidates must have at least 5 years of police experience. The training emphasizes teamwork and psychological resilience.

The unit is organized into 4 operational groups: Intervention, Observation/Research, Dog Handling, and Negotiation. Each group contains specialized teams. RAID maintains a unique “on-call” system where operators live at the base for one week per month, ensuring immediate response capability. The unit is particularly noted for its expertise in building assaults and urban sniper operations.
