Operation Entebbe, also known as Operation Thunderbolt, was a high-risk hostage rescue mission carried out by Israeli elite forces on July 4, 1976. The mission successfully rescued 102 hostages held by Palestinian and German terrorists after an Air France plane was hijacked and diverted to Entebbe, Uganda. This operation remains one of the most famous special forces missions in modern military history.

Mission Background

The Air France Flight 139 was hijacked shortly after leaving Tel Aviv. The hijackers demanded the release of prisoners in Israel and other countries. Intelligence indicated the hostages were held in Kampala airport terminal under armed guard and with Ugandan military complicity.

Planning and Strategy

The Sayeret Matkal, Israel’s elite commando unit, meticulously planned the operation. Key planning elements included:

  • Rapid deployment: 2,500 km flight from Israel to Uganda using C-130 Hercules aircraft.
