Unit Overview
The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), known as the “Night Stalkers,” is the U.S. Army’s special operations aviation unit, providing helicopter support to JSOC and other special operations forces.
Specializing in night operations using advanced avionics and terrain-following radar, the 160th SOAR conducts infiltration/exfiltration, aerial resupply, and armed reconnaissance missions in high-threat environments worldwide.

Historic Missions
Night Stalker crews flew continuous missions during the “Black Hawk Down” incident, with several aircraft shot down and crews killed or wounded.
Modified stealth Black Hawks from the 160th infiltrated DEVGRU operators into Osama bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan.
Continuous support for special operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Africa, flying thousands of combat missions.
CLASSIFIED: Green Platoon & Capabilities
All 160th personnel attend “Green Platoon” – a rigorous selection and training program focusing on night flying, NVG operations, and mission planning. Pilots train for 18-24 months before becoming mission-ready.
The regiment’s aircraft feature terrain-following/terrain-avoidance radar, infrared countermeasures, missile warning systems, and in-flight refueling capabilities. MH-47Gs can fly 600 nautical miles without refueling and operate in weather conditions that ground other aviation units.
